Tips and Hints

Car Design:

  • Try to develop as many ideas as possible.
  • Keep your car's weight as low as possible (69g) - a light car will be faster than a heavy one.
  • Make sure that your car is entirely within the rules, as you will lose points if it is not.
  • In Pro-Desktop, try some of your graphics ideas before making the car using the Album function. This lets you easily apply colour to the vehicle and will look good in your presentation or portfolio.
  • You will be able to Virtual Windtunnel Test your Pro-Desktop designs. This will give you a good idea how your car will do in a race. Look at these results carefully as they can be used to improve the shape and speed of your car

Finishing Your Car:

  • Be careful when sanding down your final car. You will be surprised how soft balsa wood is and how easy it is to sand.
  • Sand the car enough to get the body smooth but not too much so that it changes the design.
  • Try to use different grades of sandpaper, starting with coarse and working towards a finer paper to achieve a better finish if you can.
  • Use glossy paint and stickers to give a smooth, professional finish.

Verbal Presentation

  • Make sure to introduce yourselves to the judges.
  • Speak clearly and look at the judges.
  • Tell the judges as much as you can about what you have done.
  • Try to think about what questions the judges might ask after your presentation.
  • Try to use props and/or a screen presentation to show off your skills and enhance your image.
  • Make sure that you understand everything that you are saying because a judge may ask you questions about it.
  • Use a screen presentation as an additional tool, and verbally expand on its ideas.
  • Practise is key, and ensure to rehearse as a team.

Portfolio

  • Try to make your portfolio as neat and tidy as possible.
  • Make sure that you understand the content, as you could agai be questioned about it.
  • Make sure you show your car designs and how they changed and evolved.
  • Try to label and annotate your drawings, photos, and diagrams.
